EURO 2012: Qualifying draw coefficients (21 August 2008)

22 August 2008

I divided the number of points for the 2010 World Cup qualifiers by the number of games each team will play in their group - amirbachar's idea. Thanks!
___________________________

The coefficients for the EURO 2012 qualifying draw will take into account results from:

2006 World Cup (qualifiers and final tournament) - 20% of total weighting
EURO 2008 (qualifiers and final tournament) - 40% of total weighting
2010 World Cup (qualifiers) - 40% of total weighting

Click here for more info on the coefficient system.

As mentioned before, I assume UEFA will use a qualifying system with six groups of six teams and three of five teams (Poland and Ukraine - automatically qualified as hosts).

Only one match played in UEFA: Kazakhstan - Andorra 3 - 0.

FIFA Ranking: Probable top 50 in September 2008

Point totals for teams from the top 20 of the October 2007 ranking should be 100% correct. For the others, there's the issue of historical rankings published before July 2006.

There are only 13 matches left to play this month (or more - I'm not sure about the Independence Cup taking place in Indonesia), so the top 50 is pretty much set in stone with the exceptions of Iran and Saudi Arabia. Iran could lose another spot with a bad result against Azerbaijan (of course, if they don't cancel that friendly too), while Saudi Arabia could lose up to three places if they don't win against Qatar.

Italy reclaim second place from Germany, Turkey return to the top 10 at the expense of Russia, but are still 5 places shy of their best ever ranking - 5th in June 2004.

Mexico managed to overtake the USA, but Scotland failed to get the win they needed in order to overtake England.

Despite losing 2 - 0 against Finland, Israel will go up one place to 19 - their best ever ranking. Same goes for New Caledonia (95th - previous best ranking was 114th), Chad (126th - 127th in July 2008), Montenegro (135th - 142nd in June 2008) and Bhutan (186th - 187th in December 2003).

Sweden will match their worst ever ranking, first achieved in August 1998 - 31st. Laos return to their worst ever ranking - 190th in June 2008.

Three countries will have their worst ever ranking: Tahiti (186th - 181st in June 2007), Andorra (189th - 188th in May 1997) and Faroe Islands (198th - 196th in August 2008).

New Caledonia and Kyrgyzstan will be the best climbers - 21 places, followed by Algeria (14), then Gabon and Guyana - both with 12.

The worst movers will be Solomon Islands, going down 24 places, then Samoa (-22) and Korea DPR (-21).

FIFA Ranking: September 2008 preview (II)

Friendlies have been scheduled and canceled since August 8th, so here's a quick update of the previous version.

Wales, Saudi Arabia, Ecuador, Honduras and Cuba could also make it into the top 50 if results go their way.

There will be 28 countries with less than 5 matches in the last 12 months, with New Zealand (3 matches) and Cuba (4 matches - including the qualifier against Trinidad and Tobago) catching the eye.

As the "current points" choice raised some eyebrows (Lusankya's to be more exact), I will use the August points and rankings instead for the first columns of the table.

Point totals for teams from the top 20 of the October 2007 ranking should be 100% correct. For the others, there's the issue of historical rankings published before July 2006.

FIFA Ranking: September 2008 preview

A lot of friendlies will be played this month and a couple of World Cup and continental qualifiers.

Here's a preview of the September 2008 FIFA rankings (only the top 50). No matter what happens, Spain will remain on top, while Italy will return on the second step of the podium. Netherlands could go third with a win against Russia.

Looking at the rivalries, Mexico will overtake the USA with a home win against Honduras, while Scotland will overtake England for the second time in the history of the rankings if they get a better result against Northern Ireland than England against the Czech Republic. England will be safe with a win, no matter what Scotland does.

Argentina will overtake Brazil with a win against Belarus.

Spain, Cameroon and Japan are safe as top teams of their confederations.

New Caledonia will replace New Zealand at the top of the OFC.

Point totals for teams from the top 20 of the October 2007 ranking should be 100% correct. For the others, there's the issue of historical rankings published before July 2006.

"Current" = as of today (August 8th). I've included in the calculations matches played up to and including August 7th. Basically, these would be the point totals if no matches would be played until the rankings are published on September 3rd.

FIFA Ranking: August 2008 trivia

Yesterday was Thursday, the deadline for matches to be included in the August 2008 FIFA Ranking calculations. FIFA may include more matches though - but no later than Sunday.

See my earlier post for the top 50 of the August 2008 FIFA World Rankings.

Mexico will have their worst ranking (32nd) since the FIFA Rankings were introduced. Their previous low point was 26th in June 2004.

Same goes for Jamaica (108th - 105th in May 2008), Faroe Islands (196th - 195th in Nov 2007), Macau (197th - 196th in Jul 2008), Central African Republic (199th - 198th in Apr 2008), Papua New Guinea (200th - 199th in Jun 2008).

San Marino match their worst ranking - 200th (first achieved in May 2008).

Belarus will reach their best ranking (56th), improving their 57th position achieved in June 2008. Rwanda (82nd - 87th first achieved in Jul 1999) and Suriname (85th - 87th first achieved in Apr 2001) also improve their best ranking record.

Israel return to their best ever position - 20th (first achieved in April 2008).

France (12th, down 2) leaves the top 10 and is replaced by Russia (10th, up 1).

Honduras (60th, down 12) and Saudi Arabia (52nd, down 3) should leave the top 50 and will be replaced by Hungary (50th, up 2) and Mali (48th, up 3).

New Caledonia, up 11 places from 126th to 115th will be the this month's best mover, followed by Trinidad and Tobago (92nd, up 10) and Qatar (72nd, up 8).

Crashing down the rankings (i.e. losing at least 10 places) are: Vietnam (165th, down 41), Panama (93rd, down 24), Iraq (76th, down 18), China (101st, down 18), Indonesia (149, down 17), Jamaica (108th, down 14), Mexico (32nd, down 13), Honduras (60th, down 12) and Swaziland (133rd, down 10).
