FIFA Ranking: Regarding Mexico (a reply to Toeball Tyler)

Here's his post: FIFA Rankings are Worthless.

This is the interesting part:

Mexico jumped from 32nd to 24th, over the United States which is currently 28th. So let me get this straight. Since the last World Rankings, Mexico has only played world powerhouse Honduras in Mexico City (and had to come back from behind), and won 2-1.

The United States on the other hand had to play in Guatemala and won 1-0. So how does Mexico jump 8 bloody spots?

He also posted this on BigSoccer:

How about providing some data that proves the jump was properly given instead of just saying I'm wrong. It is easy to point at laugh at my efforts but you are yet to provide a valid point that shows they should have made the jump.

As Solid444 already said, coming back from behind and playing home or away are not taken into account by the FIFA ranking.

Let's look at Mexico's August 2008 point totals:

The columns are as follows: Match date, Opponents' FIFA trigramme, FIFA match points for Mexico

  1. He didn't say FIFA were wrong in their calculation.
He is right that FIFA's rankings are a joke. It's based too much on the last year, plus friendlies lower your rankings! No one really takes this rankings seriously.
In Israel, which currently ranked 19th, everyone laughs at this and say that we should lose on purpose and then we might become no. 1...

  2. You're wrong Amir. He's saying just that. Look at his most recent post.

  3. Could you please post this kind of points breakdown for Croatia?

  4. I knew it would be a mistake to post the detailed point totals for Mexico :)

Sorry, I just don't have the time right now.

Maybe I will post them at some point in the future, but I fear I will receive more and more requests for detailed point totals :)

I actually thought you have this data already calculated and everything and you only need to c/p it. Sorry. :)
