FIFA Ranking: July 2009 final preview

Point totals for teams from the top 20 of the October 2007 ranking should be 100% correct. For the others, there's the issue of historical rankings published before July 2006.

  1. I'm brand new to your site. Great site. I'm very interested in statistics myself. How did you manage to get the right point totals for the Top 20 teams from the October 2007 rankings? I've been trying to run a few scenarios to see where teams will end up based on wins / losses, but haven't figured out how to count for any of the redone rankings prior to the ranking method change. How did you fix that for the top 20 from that ranking? I'd appreciate any insight.

    Thanks.

  2. Order is now restored to the universe. Brasil is #1. That is all.

  3. How is the "Final" June ranking if there is a friendly match today?

  4. The match is listed as firendly between Canada vs. Guatemala.

Are you not going to include this? :-)

    Anyway,
    Love the site!!

Regarding the top 20: see this post. There's a link to a pdf file there. Good luck!

The deadline for matches for the July ranking is June 25th. That's why it's the "Final" preview.

  6. Does FIFA have published when the final "deadlines"? (do they have the past published somewhere as well?)

So that means the Canada match will get the newest rankings?

  7. Ano:

I heard somewhere that the old ranking calculations stop the thursday before the rankings are released (but that would not make sense since the sunday confed cup games are counted).

    Edgar would better know.

  8. Edgar, got another question for the ranking guru. Does FIFA use Rounddown on all the final rankings? For example I keep getting a point total of 8.5 for the country of US Virgin Islands. If I round up it would make it 9, but FIFA and you have it as 8. I know it's not a huge difference , but I'm trying to get my formulas perfect.

They had 2 draws during the .5 time period. Their draws totaled 85 points. I took the 85 divided it by 5 then times it by the .5 and get 8.5.

    Any help would be appreciated.

As you can see from FIFA's ranking schedule, the deadline is Thursday prior to the release date. However, they sometimes include matches up to Sunday if the official match reports arrive in time.

Canada's win against Guatemala wasn't included this month - it will be included in the August ranking.

    @Watson

I get the same value as you do. Usually, FIFA rounds up values >= x.5 and rounds down values < x.5. However, the only explanation I could think of is that they round up values > x.5 and down for values <= x.5.
