2010 World Cup (UEFA): Teams to be seeded in the playoff

FIFA announced on September 29th that teams will be seeded in the European play-off draw using the October 2009 FIFA ranking.

Here's the list of teams still in the race for a play-off spot.

    Are you going to do the probable results thing? Maybe you can do that to figure out who gets in the playoffs and then we can see who are the most likely 4 seeds.

    At first glance it looks like Germany/Russia, France, Croatia and Portugal, right? And if Portugal don't make it, maybe Greece?

  2. Interesting that the four teams winning the playoffs have a chance to boost their ranking that automatic qualifiers do not. Once we are past October 14th, the group winners will have played all their games, while the four playoff winners will have a chance for two additional wins (even a win plus draw should help) and possibly leapfrog other teams in the rankings ahead of the December WC seeding.

    I wonder if two playoff wins for any of the "probable" playoff seeds would boost them into the top 7 ranking for November.

    I thought about that several times. It's actually very unfair to the teams that qualifed as group- winners...
    FIFA should do something about this.

  4. The play-off teams could also improve their UEFA coefficient and climb to a higher pot.
