FIFA Ranking: April 2010 final preview

Point totals for teams from the top 20 of the October 2007 ranking should be 100% correct. For the others, there's the issue of historical rankings published before July 2006.

Included: matches up to and including April 22nd, 2010.

The deadline for matches was yesterday, thus the match South Africa - China PR (scheduled to take place on April 28th won't be included in the ranking).

Brazil back on top. Portugal up to third.

Four countries will have their best ever ranking:

Portugal (3rd - 4th in March 2001)
Slovenia (23rd - 25th in December 2001)
Montenegro (65th - 69 in March 2010)
Comoros (172nd - 174th in March 2010)

Two countries will return to their best ever ranking:

Brazil (1st - first achieved in September 1993)
Benin (59th - first achieved in November 2009)

Morocco will return to their worst ever ranking - 70th, achieved in February 2010.

Best movers:

10 - Lithuania
7 - Peru and Armenia
6 - Slovenia

Worst movers:

-16 - Bolivia
-15 - Macau
-13 - Pakistan

Best movers in the top 50:

10 - Latvia
6 - Slovenia
5 - Colombia and Finland

Worst movers in the top 50:

-7 - Paraguay and Northern Ireland
-6 - Switzerland
-5 - Slovakia

Iran keep on climbing - now 4th in AFC.

Portugal up to 2nd in Europe.

  2. Portugal is the only european team to not lose a match in 2009, and they havent lost a match in about a year and a half.

  3. As Smashing said, Portugal had a very good 2009, as 736 points of their 1249 are from the last 12 months.

  4. While Portugal hasn't lost since Sept. 2008, they really haven't beaten any one either. The highest rated opponent they beat are currently ranked 49th. Does strength of schedule factor into this ranking at all? Or can a team make it all the way to the top by bulking up on a steady diet of minnows?
