Edgar, won't the qalification for Euro 2012 be the first cyclus to be taken into account for Uefa coeff. table for Euro 2016 draw?
ReplyDeleteForget about it, I get it. Draw will take place somewhere 2014 so qual. 2010 is first cyclus.
ReplyDeleteIt's just me thinking Euro get too big?
ReplyDeleteP.S.:I thought at least it would make qualifying shorter, but not even that...
^ Yeah I agree. Never been a fan of the "best 3rd place" system which happens with tournaments that involve a non-binary number of teams. 16 was the best. Might as well change the format to 32 teams.
ReplyDeleteQualifiers could be shorted if there were 13 groups of 4 teams. Top two from each group qualifies plus either (a) one host and one defending champ, or (b) two hosts. That makes 28 teams in the tournament -- seven groups of four teams with top two advancing along with (sorry) the two best third place teams.
ReplyDeleteI know it's not used for anything, but out of curiosity, what would France's coefficient be?
ReplyDeleteThanks, Edgar!
13 groups of 4. The group champions (13) and the best 7 runners-up are in. The 6 last runners-up face a playoff for the rest 3 spots.
ReplyDeleteIf there were two hosts, it would be 12 groups of 4 and 1 of 3. And that would be it...
But I still prefer 16 teams, not 24.

I'd like best 4 group winners get a bye to quarter-finals in a 24-team tournament (other 2 group winners + 6 group runners-up to play-off match). Still not perfect, but I think most matches will be important for at least one of the teams then.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of 13 groups of 4 either. More qualifiers, less friendlies please.
@Alex
ReplyDeleteFrance's coefficient - 6450. Just outside the first pot.
France????
ReplyDeleteI suppose they have to come up with a way to have France participate that doesn't involve handball and other methods of cheating.
Next up they might figure out a way to only have French born players and stop looting their colonies.
A variation for the 13x4 system:
ReplyDelete- Round 1: 13 groups of 4. Winners and the best runner-up qualify.
- Round 2: Play-offs.
The remaining 12 runners-up face a play-off round with the 6 winners qualified for the Euro and the 6 losers entering in a 2nd play-off round where the 3 winners are also in.
10 matchdays are needed with this system.
I don't think UEFA will move away from their groups with 5 or 6 teams, since they use it also in the U21 qualifiers.
ReplyDeleteWe'll see - I thought at one time that the EURO will be forever with 16 teams. Things change :)
