All totals should be correct - hopefully - with historical rankings dropping out of the system.
FIFA might use an intermediate pre-World Cup ranking as they did in 2006 and totals could be different. I will check this on July 23rd.
Botswana - Chad 1 - 0 and Togo - Malawi 1 - 1 are not yet on FIFA.com, thus I didn't include these two matches in the computation.
Should FIFA include them the totals would be: Malawi 425, Togo 421, Botswana 331, Chad 185.

Can you do a post with the total amount of FIFA points won over the past four years (the entire 2010 cycle)? That would be a neat ranking to see.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean exactly? Just the number of FIFA match points added up?
ReplyDeleteI guess it would be the same as this post, just without the weighting by year.
ReplyDeleteTHX 4 THIS!!!
ReplyDeleteWell the official FIFA rankings are now out (belatedly) and once again your work has been spot on. Thanks for the good work.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.fifa.com/worldfootball/ranking/lastranking/gender=m/fullranking.html
I've checked only the first 50 positions. The only difference that I've noticed with the FIFA's website list is that Egypt total is 1052 instead of 1053. Perhaps it can be only a rounding problem..
ReplyDeletespot on! thx
ReplyDeleteFound some more differences. Botswana and Togo can be explained by the Botswana-Chad and the Togo-Malawi matches. All others have only 1 point difference. Canada is the only one with 2 points difference.
ReplyDeleteBotswana 18 pt diff
Togo 7
Egypt 1
Guinea 1
Ethiopia 1
Bermuda 1
Malawi -1
Jordan -1
Azerbaijan -1
Rwanda -1
Grenada -1
St. Kitts and Nevis -1
Canada -2
I have a question regarding Malawi. July points = 425
ReplyDelete263.50 points for the draw against Togo on July 9. Where did the other points come from? How did FIFA arrive at 425?
@Anonymous about Malawi:
ReplyDeleteAverage all the results from Malawi's matches in the last 12 months. They have played 13 matches in that period, earning a total of about 3518.6 points (if I did the math right). Dividing that by 13 gives an average of 270.7. That is the first part of Malawi's overall total.
For the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th parts of the total, you would do the same thing for the matches from 13-24, 25-36, and 37-48 months ago to get an average for each of those periods. But then you need to multiply each of those averages by 0.5, 0.3, and 0.2, respectively, before adding them to the overall total.
The sum of all 4 parts equals the final rating.
You can also check out some of the examples in these posts:

Thanks Alex :)
ReplyDeleteRegarding differences - I think there are some matches included using different rankings. It's close enough for me though.
