2014 FIFA World Cup seeding for UEFA teams (10 November 2010)

The preliminary draw will take place on July 31st, 2011.

Assumptions:

- UEFA will again have 13 spots
- UEFA will again use the system with 9 groups
- FIFA will use the July 2011 FIFA ranking to seed the teams

The July 2011 FIFA ranking will include matches played between July 2007 and July 2011. We already 50% of the final ranking. Things can and will change before July 2011 as there are many matches to be played involving European teams: EURO 2012 qualifiers and plenty of friendlies.

UEFA will only use the national team coefficient for the European Championships draws (qualifying and final tournament).

This is the July 2011 ranking (for UEFA only) using matches played up to and including November 9th, 2010 and matches scheduled up to July 2011 (only those on fifa.com).

The "1.0" part is computed this way: points gained / (number of matches played + scheduled).

Portugal and Russia replace Italy and Slovakia in the first pot.
Denmark, France, Czech Republic and Switzerland replace Sweden, Serbia, Ukraine and Lithuania in the second pot.
Hungary, Bulgaria and Austria replace Northern Ireland, Israel and Scotland in the third pot.
Armenia, Estonia and Belgium replace Latvia, Bosnia-Herzegovina amd Cyprus in the fourth pot.
Azerbaijan replace Iceland in the fifth pot.

Best movers:

17 - Armenia
11 - Czech Republic
10 - Bulgaria

Worst movers:

-9 - Serbia and Scotland
-8 - Turkey and Cyprus
-7 - Romania

Most points gained:

338 - Portugal
292 - Spain
262 - Russia

Most points lost:

-73 - Scotland
-40 - Lithuania
-34 - Serbia

  1. There's a story run today in Poland about the weak position in rankings and the seedings for WC 2014.
They think they should play weaker opposition to gain points. But what can Poland realistically do to gain ground?

  2. Well, well... I told you so :)

    Are Poland the new Austria?

I wrote to PZPN in November 2009 warning them about this, but I got no reply.

What can they do now? Obviously win the matches against Cote d'Ivoire (home), Turkey (away), Greece (away). I could also help them pick opponents for 9 February, 3 June and 7 June. But they need to contact me.

  3. Well Smuda and Lato are the ones in charge. I doubt however any of them cares. Smuda probably knows he'll be out after the EURO (failure)!

  4. Meh... It's their loss.

Thanks for the info - I wrote a post about this.

    The Poles finally wake up
