FIFA Ranking: December 2010 preview (I)

Doesn't include knock-out stages for Caribbean Championship, Gulf Cup, AFF Cup and CECAFA Cup for various reasons: B teams, unknown format and most of all - lack of time today. However, it's OK for teams not involved in these tournaments.

Next update: November 19th, 2010.

  1. Hello. I wonder if you could please explain to me why Portugal and Argentina will be dropping points please?

Oh and also why Egypt can seemingly take bad results and drop very few points, why is that? Only a 5pt drop if they'd lost to Australia, and on the back of the two terrible ACON qualifier results? Why? What's keeping their score high?

I thought friendlies were averaged, competitive games were averaged, and the two totals put together for the points score, am I right or wrong? My memory is rather hazy on this. Do they add up 8 seperate totals altogether, friendlies for the current year, the one before, the one before that and the one before that, and competitives for the current year, the one before, the one before that and the one before that?

I did read the rankings explanation on the site and understand how to do the short term calculations, and the devaluation process but I still struggle to understand how certain things happen in the long term.

I'm sorry if I've gone on a lot. In return I will do something for you.

    KO stage, Caribbean Championship.

The two highest ranked teams Cuba, Grenada, Guyana and Antigua and Barbuda can play are Jamaica (82nd) and Trinidad and Tobago (78th).

For Trinidad and Tobago it's Jamaica (82nd) and Guyana (86th).

For Jamaica it's Trinidad and Tobago (78th) and Guyana (86th).

Sidenote, it amuses me all the complaints about my team, England, being "too high". I understand why they're up there, it's because you need victories for a high ranking, draws are all but worthless even against top class teams, and England have a lot of victories and not many draws.

I'm going to laugh at their reactions to England still being 6th in December despite the disappointing loss to France.

  2. Argentina lose points because of their game against Brazil. The points they got for the win (591) are less then the average of the other matches played in the last 12 months.

Portugal lose points because the 18.11.2009 playoff win against Bosnia-Herzegovina dropped to the 0.5 time frame.

Egypt's ranking is mainly based on their excellent CAN 2010 final tournament - 6 games - 6 wins.

  3. Also, friendlies and competitive matches for each year are averaged together, not separately. So only 4 separate totals, not 8.

That's why the Argentina friendly lowers their average (despite being a win against Brazil).

  4. Thanks both of you.

Ugh, that is stupid with the friendlies. They're worth little enough points as it is, seperate averages for competitives and friendlies would make them worthwhile, but that is crazy, being punished for a great victory. You're Portugal and beating Spain hurts your chances of being a pot 1 team in World Cup qualifying? That is a joke! Still, I suppose if everyone else is playing friendlies, you're alright, but some teams play few friendlies, and they'll enjoy an advantage because of it. It won't matter to Argentina and Brazil, Brazil guaranteed top seeds as hosts, Argentina, they should storm through the qualifiers now the Maradona circus has been removed and no Brazil, easily getting seeded at the World Cup.

If you ask me competitive games only should be used to determine rankings. It annoyed me when I realised the new European coefficient which only uses competitive games will not be used for World Cup seeding.

Egypt, really I should have figured that one out for myself. Makes their average highly resistant. Egypt will feel the effects of those results once the ACON victories start devaluing. Soon, Egypt. Soon...

  5. @Alex

Thanks. I read the original comment too fast and I missed the 8 totals part.

    @Anonymous

Actually, Portugal gained 6 points (for a total of 1090) by defeating Spain. Without this win, Portugal would have 1084 points.
