The qualifying format has been approved by FIFA and the May 2011 FIFA ranking will be used to seed the teams.
The May 2011 FIFA ranking will include matches played between May 2007 and May 2011. We already 50% of the final ranking. Not many changes from now on: only one tournament - 2011 Central American Cup and friendlies.
This is the May 2011 ranking (for CONCACAF only) using matches played up to and including December 9th, 2010 and matches scheduled up to May 2011 (only those on fifa.com).
The "1.0" part is computed this way: points gained / (number of matches played + scheduled).

Congratulations to Grenada. I called them a minnow in a previous post, but they've surpassed Trinidad and Tobago in the past two Caribbean tournaments and that is now reflected in the rankings. The country is tiny. To qualify once for the Gold Cup is remarkable. To do it twice in a row is extraordinary.
ReplyDeleteAs for this draw, why can't CONCACAF hold off a month until the Gold Cup is complete? Surely then they would have a far better and more accurate ranking to work with.
The CONCACAF format excites me. There will be some tremendous beatings, but I love underdogs, and there will be one in most games.
Cuba taking full advantage of the fact Guadeloupe is not a FIFA nation. I'm sure everyone will want Cuba as their top seed if they hold the spot.
Oh my! I didn't realise Cuba had rocketed up the table like that! They'll be top seeded for sure now!
ReplyDeleteImagine something like
Cuba
St. Kitts and Nevis
Minnow
Minnow
No, no, that's not realistic. The group will be:
ReplyDeleteCuba
Trinidad and Tobago
Minnow

ReplyDeleteWhat do you mean? SK+N are in Pot 2. It could be anyone there or nearby.
Or it could be Cuba, T+T, Guatemala, Minnow.
That would be a real fight.
Anonymous thinks Trinidad and Tobago will end up in an easy group, no matter which pot they are in. :)
