2012 and 2013 may both see an underdog turn into the top dog. The top dog, Egypt, has already been kicked around and sent packing with it's tail tucked between it's legs. Several other big dogs have followed, and I think we're far from done with that...

ReplyDeleteSouth Africa failed to qualify for the last one. And first World Cup host to go out in the group stage. They don't belong in that list. They're nothing special.
ReplyDeleteBut maybe you can add Algeria. Actually qualified for the World Cup, and a semi finalist last ACON.
ReplyDeleteIf I worked at CAF, I'd add some small bonus for WC'06 and WC'10 achievements as well (like 1pt for GS, 2 points for R2 and so on)

ReplyDeleteWhen you look back at ACON'06, 08, 10 the best games played included Egypt. They played the most skillful and inventive football, so I agree 2012 ACON will be a much poorer competetion without them. Ivory Coast, Ghana and Morocco have the chance to shine.
ReplyDeleteWhy? Egypt finished dead last in their qualifying group, eliminated with 2 games to go. They couldn't make it to the World Cup either. Why would they suddenly have turned back into a good team? It doesn't matter what their name is, they were found badly wanting.
ReplyDeleteI disagree, you are judging without looking at the circumstances and how their games went. They had more than half of their team injured, then lacked games because of the revolution and had few (poor) decisions go against them at crucial moments. Come 2012 they will have built a new generation team and maintain their position as a leading African football nation; the pedigree is there and all nations have a poor period without exception.

Even if Egypt did qualify they still wouldn't have performed. There is still no structure in the country and irrational team picking would've been the pinnacle downfall of their 1st round knock out in AFCON '12. Let them make a comeback in 2014. It will be a let down to not see their flair that they displayed 2 years ago but whats done is done. Im just embarrassed about South Africa and their negligence. I would've liked to see my home country play but frankly I don't think they deserve it.
ReplyDeleteEgypt have however qualified for the Olympics. Gabon and Morocco will join them. Senegal await the 4th best team from Asia, who they will meet in a playoff.
