I will be very interested tosee how many points England (defeated Spain and Sweden) and Uruguay (defeated Chile and Italy) have in the next ranking. With Netherlands tying Switzerland and losing to Germany could Uruguay pass them? Even Germany drew with Ukraine, though they beat the 2nd ranked Netherlands, so I'd be surprised if Uruguay could pass Germany too, but I just wonder....
ReplyDeleteI think Uruguay will move to 3rd place
ReplyDeleteIf Germany had won also against Ukraine, they would've passed Netherlands, but due to the draw, they have 20 points too few...:(
ReplyDeleteCountry Points
ESP 1564
NED 1365
GER 1345
URU 1309
ENG 1173
What?! We actually lose a point for defeating the 14th ranked team?! (FIFA site says 1174 for beating Spain but doesn't have Sweden) :(
ReplyDeleteAdd Spain to the list please if you can. They almost followed up losing to England by losing to Costa Rica. Way to take the gloss off our win, Spain. They rescued a tie in injury time. How much of a dent will that put into their ranking?
Uruguay also lose 10pts for their win over Italy I see.

ReplyDeleteAnd thanks.
Note: Spain had to come from 2-0 down in Costa Rica. Costa Rica are one of those teams that are powerful at home, but still...
Neither England nor Uruguay lose any points; they actually gain points since last ranking. Uruguay's win over Italy give them however points below their most recent time frame average.
ReplyDeleteLorric: In Edgar's post it says minimum and maximum points per nation.
ReplyDeleteAlso, FIFA Ranking 101: As the maximum you can get for a friendly is 600 (2 x 3 x 1 x 100) any team with a ranking above 600 loses points by playing friendlies.
Further down:
6 BRA 1143
7 POR 1100
8 CRO 1091
9 ITA 1082
10 ARG 1067
@ Haakon
ReplyDeleteI should have remembered this stuff...
*facepalm*
It would be the ranking for that first year though, not the total of course. I wonder what England's is. England went undefeated this year with 6 wins 3 draws, so...
*Check's FIFA site*
491
And the friendly loss to France last November will drop out of the 1 year average, which must help, shedding the only defeat. I wonder what that does to the average, as I presume 491 is before we drop the France defeat. Maybe the France defeat being removed raises it above 600 already, with the Spain win preventing it from dropping below 600 (or a bit less), so the Sweden match knocks one point off the average?
And Uruguay is 643.76, which will rise with the Chile win, so of course they suffer from their friendly win more than England. I'm really writing this more for me than anyone else, but maybe someone will find it useful...
ReplyDeleteAs for Uruguay, I'm really starting to believe that the smallest country in South America is truly the strongest in South America...
FIFA could eliminate this problem by having two seperate averages, one for competitives, and one for friendlies. Thus 8 totals to add together. I wish they would, I'm sure it would make the ranking so much more effective. And so much more user friendly. Friendlies would be a positive part of a team's ranking, but would still be dwarfed by the points total for competitive games.
ReplyDeleteActually, forget my idea now I think about it. Sometimes teams don't play many friendlies in a year. What if a team only played one friendly and won, that might give them an artificially high score.
ReplyDelete@ Lorric:
ReplyDeleteI am starting to believe you are correct about Uruguay. A team without Forlan and Suarez defeats a powerful Italian team at home. The top four seem to be getting closer to each other with each passing month.

ReplyDeleteYes, my England and Costa Rica have pulled Spain down, Uruguay push up, while Switzerland and Germany drag Netherlands down while Germany's growth is curtailed by Ukraine.
England at number 5 now is pushing up, but still far away from the top 4, over 100pts out.
Armenia forever
