FIFA Women's Ranking: June 2012 preview

Next update: 6 April 2012.

I'm still waiting for an answer for FIFA regarding possible errors in the rankings, so bear this in mind while looking at the table below.

Minimum points: losing all matches 6 - 0.
Maximum points: winning all matches 6 - 0.

Brazil already lost 15 points by losing 2 - 1 against Canada in USA.

For each match I use the current points (as of today).

USA (2166) would drop 13 points by losing 6 - 0 to Japan (2114) in Japan.
USA (2166) would drop 18 points by losing 6 - 0 to Brazil (2078) in Japan.

Will improve this minimum/maximum algorithm next week (maybe).

USA could lose 1st place, but only if they lose heavily against both Japan and Brazil.

  1. You'll be lucky to get any interest in this I predict. And I actually watch women's international football occasionally, and not because I want to see breasts bounce.

Most people either see women's football as somewhere between a joke to being outright offended by it's very existence.

  2. Well ,here's some interest for a start. Keep up the GREAT effort, Mr. Edgar.
I don't see much discussion about the women's rankings on the big soccer boards beyond the top 20 nations, as it doesn't really change that much from quarter to quarter unless there are major qualifiers or WWC or olympics happening. If you can fit 5 columns, I think it's far better to have columns for a "likely" loss of 0-1, and a "likely" win of 1-0. Gives a much better indication about points that will exchange than the hypothetical min and max events that (almost) never occur.

  4. @Lorric

    I don't watch women's football. I hardly watch men's football :)

    Thanks!

    1. I don't understand. On a competitive International weekend, I end up watching matches all day from all over the World. In a major tournament I try to watch as many matches as possible. Where does the interest come from if you hardly watch?

    2. I hardly watch because I have better things to do: spending time with my wife, playing with my kids, meeting friends.

Where does the interest come from... I always liked statistics ever since I was in high school. And before you ask - yes, I wasn't very popular :)
