See you in January Edgar. Happy holidays! :)
ReplyDeleteWow, plenty of African teams are getting the legs cut out from under them.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteFIFA changed the publishing day for 2013 from Wednesday to Thursday. So the first ranking in 2013 will be out on Thursday January 17th.
ReplyDeleteI think FIFA did this to put the deadline for matches being taken into account solid on Sunday. So no more fiddling around with Thursday and maybe Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
Am I correct or is is something completely else?
@Hussein
ReplyDeleteNo, I didn't put it, as the announcement was made 1 day after I posted this. It's included in the January 2013 ranking.
@Lorric and Anonymous
Thanks!
@Tobcoach
Yes, noticed in December. For a couple of days they kept the "Monthly on Wednesday" text. They changed it this morning :)
Belize have qualified for the CONCACAF Gold Cup!
ReplyDeleteCosta Rica and Honduras join them. A draw was required between Panama and El Salvador to decide who will join them due to them having equal records. El Salvador won this draw, thus Panama and Guatemala will play off for the last available place.
Tournament hosts Costa Rica will play El Salvador in one semi final and Honduras will play Belize in the other.
Panama defeat Guatemala to take the last available place in the Gold Cup.
Deleteany idea when an update is due?
ReplyDeleteIvory Coast on course to become a top 5 ranked country (2 out of 2). Algeria bound to drop big after two losses (and probably a third).
Ivory Coast have won that group. They can put out a B team if they want for Algeria. If Algeria beat Ivory Coast, they'll barely drop.
DeleteCote d'Ivoire B Team:
DeleteYeboah - Boka, Ismael Traore, Kolo Toure, Lolo - Razack, Ya Konan, Gradel - Kone, Bony, Lacina Traore
Still pretty much the best team at the AFCON with only Ismael and Razack unknown quality... Besides I'm pretty sure Drogba will want to start after being benched.
Hope they win it just for ranking purposes.
Côte d'Ivoire still on course for 4th place on FIFa Rankings in February. ALso Ghana can make a nice leap, back into the top 20 if they do well in the remaining matches. Algeria will lose a bunch of points (-104) and could drop outside the top 30. So as axpected a big reshuffle in the African continent.
ReplyDeleteI thought the Algeria draw would hurt them. Good to hear. I guess not only does it have to do with good results but also with the rather mediocre 2010 AFCON being less important (2 wins, 2 losses)
ReplyDelete@Lorric
ReplyDeleteSuprised by Belize - good for them! However, for me at least, Nicaragua qualifying 4 years ago (if I'm not mistaken) was even more suprising.
Why? Nicaragua have a comparable population to other Central American countries, while Belize is tiny and have always been worse than Nicaragua. Beating Nicaragua was their first win in the competition ever. They also came 4th while Nicaragua came 5th when they qualified.
DeleteBosnia, THE BEST! :)
ReplyDelete@Lorric
ReplyDeleteLooking at historical results (if my memory doesn't play tricks on me) Nicaragua were at the wrong side of some heavy beatings. Belize were also losing, but by smaller margins.
I'm not sure. They were both minnows, just stepping stones to be stepped on by the other 5 teams, both got smacked around, but Nicaragua got the better of Belize when they met I believe.
DeleteAnyway, remember it was Belize's first ever win in the competition this year when they beat Nicaragua.
