Interesting that Chad's withdrawal from the AFCON rocketed them to their highest ever position.
ReplyDeleteWhat would be Chad's ranking in April if they hadn't withdrawn, their three losses hadn't been annulled, and they had played the away match with Tanzania and lost it?
Chad would have had 231 points on spot 142 instead of 348 points on spot 97 !
DeleteWow, withdrawing from a competition you've already been eliminated from shouldn't benefit you like this. For the purposes of the group standings, sure, annul the results, but the games were played and lost, and to discard them from the rankings is absurd.
Deletea terrible month for European teams, they may be back in July ranking :D
ReplyDeleteHardly. The South Americans also have their own continental championship this summer. Two Copa Americas in as many years could create a serious anomaly in the ranking, favouring the South American teams. The consequences will be felt in the World Cup seeding.
ReplyDeleteTill the WC seeding other continent's NT's will have plenty of time to adjust their ranking position.
DeleteYes, but so will the South Americans. They have a continental tournament this summer where the top teams should collect massive points, plus a lot of WC qualifiers with very few friendlies until October 2017. I think it is likely that all 5 South American teams that qualify for WC 2018 will be in the top seeded pot. Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Uruguay, Chile. (Ecuador have a bit less chance for a top seeded spot, but sit well currently in the qualifiers). So that's 5 out of 8 top seeds. That has never happened, and it has a lot to do with two Copa Americas in back to back years, which no other continent has.
DeleteEuropean have won only a couple more World Cups than South America. No anomaly.

ReplyDeleteJust my opinion, but I think Uruguay are a better quality team than being 9th in the world. They are in peak form in qualifying so far.
ReplyDeleteI know its all about results but on squad quality alone I would put them somewhere around 5th - 7th.
I agree. In all their qualifying matches thus far, they have been missing key players. In the first two matches, they were without Suarez or Cavani. More recently, Uruguay were without Godin and Gimenez. Lets see how they do with their full starting XI in the Copa America.
DeleteI'm Uruguayan and I feel that ranking is about right.
DeletePeople get very touchy about the rankings but the way I see it it tells you the band each team is in.
If you fall anywhere in the top 10 then that's your band. Top 20, top 30 etc.
Just because one team is 4Th and the other 8Th doesn't mean the 8Th team is a worse team than the 4Th.
They are both top 10 teams.
Honestly the fifa rankings are the most honest thing Fifa do by a very long way. It's simple math.
Philippines! Mabuhay!
ReplyDeletefive Conmebol teams on the top 10, is this the first time?

DeleteThe Bosphorus, Dardanelles, and Black Sea are the only linked salt-waterways that separate Europe and Asia. Consequently, Turkey is the only country on the conventional Europe-Asia boundary that shows any obvious appearance of being on two continents. Three of Turkey's provinces (Edirne, Kırklareli and Tekirdağ) are entirely in Europe, the province of Edirne also having a small territory in Western Thrace, while Çanakkale and Istanbul are transcontinental provinces. Three of Çanakkale's districts are entirely in Europe and its other nine districts are entirely in Asia. Nineteen of Istanbul's districts are entirely in Europe and its other twelve districts are entirely in Asia.
DeleteIs there any possibility to postpone June ranking to include AFCON qualifiers played in 4th & 5th June?? Talks in CAF we heared that,, . I think FIFA does not change these fixed ranking dates .
ReplyDeletehttp://www.ftf.org.tn/fr/qualifications-pour-la-coupe-du-monde-russie-2018-tirage-au-sort-du-troisieme-tour/
ReplyDeleteWow, a special FIFA ranking only for Africa a week after the official world ranking is published. I wonder why don't they simply push the whole ranking for one week instead of publishing a special one only for Africa?
DeleteExtraordinary. It seems FIFA wants to include the June CAF17-qualifiers in the seeding ranking voor the CAF-draw. Thanks Hossam for this strange bit of news.
ReplyDeleteI dont think that news is true,,
ReplyDeleteIs it true or just rumors??? i think that Fifa dont change his fixed ranking dates before.
ReplyDeleteOr it is an April Fools joke after all :) The link to the Tunisian FA does seem official enough though.
