DeleteIran above Russia.... Most likely, the Russians will hit consecutive all-time lows the next couple of months due to the fact they only play friendly matches until the Confederations Cup mid-2017. If they fail there, they could well find themselves outside the top-50 at the start of the World Cup in 2018.
ReplyDeleteAfter MD1 of the European qualifying campaign for Russia WC 2018 elo predicts the following 9 countries to qualify as group-winner:
ReplyDelete1: France
2: Portugal
3: Germany
4: Wales
5: Poland
6: England
7: Spain
8: Belgium
9: Croatia (same points/GD as Turkey on second place)
and as 8 best group numbers 2 (ordered by December 2016 ranking for now)
7: Italy
2: Switzerland
1: Netherlands
9: Turkey (same points/GD as Croatia on first place)
6: Slovakia
8: Bosnia-Herzegovina
4: Republic of Ireland
5: Denmark
Czech Republic (same points/GD as Northern Ireland on third place) is worst group number 2.
Changes compared to the initial prediction:
Spain group winner instead of Italy in group 7.
Denmark to second place instead of Romania in group 5.
After the first two MD's of the third round of Asian qualifying for Russia WC 2018 elo predicts:
1: Korea Republic and Iran to qualify
2: Australia and Japan to qualify
Uzbekistan from group 1 and United Arab Emirates from group 2 qualify for the 5th-place play-off. Uzbekistan qualifies for the intercontinental play-off against Panama.
Changes compared to the initial prediction:
Australia group winner instead of Japan in group 2.
At the start this November of the hexagonal in CONCACAF qualifying for Russia WC 2018 elo predicts the following 3 countries to qualify:
1: Mexico
2: Costa Rica
3: USA
Panama at fourth place qualifies for the intercontinental play-off against Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan qualifies for Russia WC 2018.
And to be complete:
ReplyDeleteAfter MD8 (of 18) of the South American qualifying campaign for Russia WC 2018 elo predicts:

Uruguay at fifth place qualifies for the intercontinental play-off against New Zealand.
At the start this November of the third round of OFC qualifying for Russia WC 2018 elo predicts the following 2 countries to qualify for the 1st-place play-off:

2: Tahiti
New Zealand qualifies for the intercontinental play-off against Uruguay.
Uruguay qualifies for Russia WC 2018.
And what about Africa?
DeleteSee the prediction for the third round of African qualifying of July 24th. Nothing changed there.
DeleteIn today's September ranking FIFA lost Tonga, apparently somewhere in the process of adding Gibraltar. Fun for the whole family, that website :D

ReplyDeleteHow on earth are Peru ranked so highly? Their World Cup qualification results are woeful.
ReplyDeleteIn September they lost to Bolivia and managed to beat Ecuador at home. The two games prior to that were a 1-0 loss away to Uruguay (no disgrace) and a barely scraped draw at home to Venezuela with a 4th minute injury time equaliser after being down 0-2.
This is a 25th in the world ranked team above Sweden, Romania, Czech, Paraguay etc?? They must have had some exceptional friendly results
Even Elo have them 18th.
DeleteIsn't that because Peru plays more competitive matches? The WC Qualifying for South America has a decent format, with 18 matchdays and generally better opposition.
DeleteWell Daniel, you obviously forgot that all CONMEBOL-teams have had two Copa America's in the last two years. Peru won against Brazil (!) and Haiti in the group and lost on PSO to Colombia in the quarter finals of the last edition this Summer.
ReplyDeleteAnd in the 2015-Copa they reached third place with wins along the way against Bolivia, Venezuela and Paraguay.
Not too shabby !
The qualifier-win against Ecuador (ranked 17th in August) delivered just another (timely) boost to their points total.
Teams should not climb so high with such little casual success like Peru. I'm not saying Peru must be ranked in the bottom overall because South American teams generally face better oposition than all others except European teams. Although around 50th position, behind UEFA countries which showed good qualifying performances and reached UEFA Euro would suit better for a side who surprised some of their opponenets but are still struggling regionally.
DeleteIt would be expected if Peru had climbed many positions when they reached third place in 2015 Copa América, in fact. But they actually should have fallen behind beacuse of their dead duck campaign in CONMEBOL Qualifying. Occasional success should not be enough to maintain any team in the top, otherwise Brazil should have been always the No. 1 in the rankings up to this date or almost it since 1994, no matter how falling short they were in the most recent tournaments.
