Changes since the July 2016 update
The most important change is the calculation for Russia. After this discussion, I've decided it makes sense to include only the 2014 WC and EURO 2016 cycles. Thus, they shoot up to the top of the rankings, only 32 points ahead of Germany. Since Russia's total won't change, they will soon lose the top position.

Hi, when is the actual draw made for the qualifying matches for Euro 2020, what date have they pencilled in?
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing after the group stage of the Nations League. That ends in November 2018, so my best guesss is in December 2018. Qualifying starts in March 2019.
DeleteIt has to be after Nations League group stage because the seedings are made based on the results of the Nations League.
DeleteIt seems there will be even less space left to play friendly matches in the calendar for the minnows, most of them will be drawn in groups of six teams in Euro Qualifying and all in groups of four teams because they'll enter League D, although may still meet better ranked opponents in qualifiers like before. We'll see if they have a better chance to improve playing each other more often. Even the eternal losers San Marino have already clinched one draw against Estonia.
ReplyDeleteQuestion, why do league A and B have 3 pots of 4 teams, isn't it 4 pots of 3 teams, considering there will be a final 4... as well as that league c would be promoting 4 at the end of their season and if league b would only relegate 3, than the numbers would mess up
ReplyDeleteAlle leagues have 4 groups. In leagues A en B each group consist of 3 teams (2*3*4 = 24 teams). In league C 3 groups consist of 4 teams and 1 group consists of 3 teams (3*4 + 1*3 = 15 teams). In league D each group consists of 4 teams (4*4 = 16 teams).
DeleteIn total: 24+15+16 = 55 UEFA-teams.
That's why you need 3 seeding pots of each 4 teams for leagues A en B to be able to draw 4 groups of 3 teams. You need as much seeding pots as there are teams in a group and as much teams in each seeding pot as there are groups to fill.
The 4 groupwinners of the 4 groups in league A fight in the Final Four for the title. The 4 number threes of the 4 groups relegate to league B. The 4 groupwinners of the 4 groups in league B promote to league A etc. etc.
It all fits perfectly :)
Ah, there suppossed to be seeding pots... it all seems so obvious now, really don't know how I didn't see that. For some reason I thought they were like examples of possible groups after the seeding had taken place. Now it all makes sense though, so thank you very much dear helpful person :)

2. What if only 2 nations from division A and 2 from division B not qualified (or 1/3 or 3/1)? Will A & B have one play-off spot and C & D will have 3 play-off spots???
If all division A teams are already qualified, which is very likely to happen, the spots will be distributed to the best ranked teams of lower leagues. It's supposed to make the competition more attractive, but in my opinion this tournament system will function nothing but poorly. And combining the complicated details with the distribution of direct spots equally for all divisions ignoring the abismal technical differences between them, we may conclude that the guys of UEFA for some reason are determined in making the qualification process each time less competitive.
DeleteIf they intend to distribute the possible remaining spots for March 2020 play-offs which would be dropped to the lower divisions, will they exclude results against the lowest ranked team in a group with four teams of Division C to define the rankings? And what if all twenty teams qualified by normal route are from leagues A and B, will they allocate the first four accumulated "top league" play-off spots for the four teams relegated to League C? This system is always more complicated than what you think!
