What's with 2018 FIFA World Cup final draw seeding? How changed?
ReplyDeleteGod willing, I will update the sims sometime in the next 30 days.
DeleteLooking ahead, I was just pondering what system UEFA will use for 2022 qualifying. As there will be 55 nations involved, you'd expect them to be spread across 10 groups (5x5 & 5x6) rather than the usual 9 groups. With the 10 group winners qualifying for the finals, it could be awkward for them to try and allocate the other 3 slots from the 10 runners-up. Could it be that the best 6 runners-up would be drawn into the play-offs with the other 4 runners-up missing out completely?
ReplyDeleteThe alternatives are the traditional 9 groups, but that would mean one group having 7 teams, which would mean extra matchdays for that group, and nowhere to put those extra matchdays in the calendar.
Or 11 groups of 5, which would provide an even greater headache in terms of who reaches the play-offs.
Perhaps it's time for UEFA to finally have some preliminaries and maybe whittle the field down to 48 teams in 8 groups of 6 (winners through and runners-up and 2 best 3rd into 5 play-off matches)?
It will be interesting to see what they come up with.
11 group winners and the winners of the top two leagues of the Nations League?
DeleteThe 2022 WC has been moved to November/December. That means more dates available for qualifiers. Hopefully that means seven groups of 7-8 teams each with the top two of each group qualified (with the exception of the runner-up with the worst record).
ReplyDeleteThe late start, however, means a headache for the 2024 Euro and Nations League.
Personally I'd like to see UEFA get out of FIFA.
Will you be doing a 2017 Confederations Cup simulation (pre/post March world cup qualifers) now that Cameroon have qualified.
ReplyDeleteYes, hopefully.
