FIFA ranking: September 2020 final preview

In the end only the first 2 match days in the UEFA Nations League 2020 group stage and one AFC-friendly for a total of 55 matches were played this window. But not to complain, I'm glad there's some NT-football again.

The prospects for the October and November window are still uncertain. UEFA will continue their schedule, but CONCACAF and AFC have again postponed all NT-activity, now until March next year. Further adaptations to their WC-qualifying formats seems inevitable or they have to revert to 3 matches in a FIFA-window, like UEFA does partially already.
Still no word from CONMEBOL. However, if they want to complete their qualifying format (requiring 18 MD's) in time, they should start no later than October. CAF has scheduled their first competitive matches for CAF Nations Cup qualification in November. No NT-activity in OFC this year.

  1. Great job Ed as always! Can you share big Excel table like "points_calculation_20191129.xlsm" with every such final preview as you did earlier? Thanks in advance!

    1. You're welcome.

I will, but only after the September ranking is published and I have had the chance to compare my results against theirs. I don't want to share information that may be incorrect :)

    2. Yeah, it's very reasonably to publish such file monthly on a permanent basis after FIFA official ranking. Unfortunately they do not disclose such information. Thanks a lot!

  2. Only a little remark, Fifa specified that the September international window was for Uefa nations only. This is reported also in their official pdf IMC 2020-2024, published in august. The practical effect is that clubs are not obliged to release players for national teams outside UEFA. So I think the friendly match Uzbekistan-Tajikistan, if included in the new ranking, will be considered as friendly outside the IMC (I=5).

  3. Could indeed be as you say, Jos. Though I haven't seen since June 2018 a previous example of such a case, so let's wait and see what FIFA decides to do.

  4. Are San Marino now officially the worst team in the world? If they aren't going to finally win a competitive game in this group, I am struggling to see where it will come from. There are still two rounds of matches to go for them, so I have fingers crossed. Gibraltar at home is surely the best chance they will get for a while. Imagine if they somehow fluked a win in the qualifiers against, say, a pot 4 team. How many places would they gain? 20? 30? 40? And how quickly would the losing manager be sacked? 5 minutes? 10 minutes? 5 seconds?

  5. The FIFA ranking says so, but San Marino hasn't been measured yet against any minnow from other confederations. And they have the 'luck' to play a lot of competitive matches against simply stronger teams, so they lose their points rather quickly at the moment compared to these other minnows.
One win against a team from around spot 100 (let's say Luxembourg) in WCq for instance would win them 21 points. You can see above that they would need a few of those surprises to really climb their way out of the cellars.

    1. I wonder how they have 811 points. From recollection they drew a game 0-0 v Estonia some years ago, but that doesn't seem like it could account for that many points. They have also won a single friendly game vs. Liechtenstein 1-0, that also can't be worth more than a few points.

They should set up a friendly against US Virgin Islands or Anguilla!

  6. San Marino started in June 2018 with the introduction of the new ranking calculation method by FIFA with 876 points. This was a translation of the position of each team in the May 2018 ranking to initial starting points, so that the new calculation could be applied for each team when they played their first match after the introduction of the new calculation method. They were then 203rd in the May 2018 ranking.
Since then San Marino lost 65 points and dropped to 210th and last, while for instance Montserrat (204th and 872 points in June 2018) now have 921 points on 183rd and showed some real imporvement in the CNL matches.
Some other minnows then, like Eritrea and Tonga, started with the minimum 868 points as they were lowest ranked in May (206th), hardly played anything and subsequently dropped only a few points since then.

  7. I've checked my results against the published ranking. All was identical.
So we have learned that the AFC-friendly, even though this September window was only 'open' for UEFA teams, still was calculated with an I-factor of 10. Apparently, when determining the I-factor for a friendly, the only check is if the match date is inside or outside the FIFA window dates.

And for all you impatient readers, here's the detailed points calculation sheet: points_calculation_20200917.xlsm. Enjoy :)!
