FIFA ranking: November 2023 final preview

FIFA will publish this ranking next Thursday November 30th. This final preview contains 189 matches, out of 200 matches played since October 23rd.

The last round of four group matches in the Pacific Games 2023 is to be played tomorrow and Friday and three of those matches will be included in the November ranking (Tahiti - Northern Mariana Islands won't be, for obvious reasons). The knock-out stage of this tournament will be included in the December 2023 ranking.

Here is an overview how the points for the teams involved could change:

Samoa, American Samoa and Tonga are included again in the November ranking.

Nobody knows when Eritrea is playing an official international match again. Now that they have withdrawn from African qualification for the World Cup 2026, it could take a while before they reappear in the FIFA ranking.

In November two teams reach their highest ranking again:

England (3 in August 2012)

Tajikistan (106 in July 2013)

Two teams reach a new highest rank:

Kosovo (101 - 105 in October 2023)

Comoros (119 - 126 in June 2022)

One team falls back to their lowest rank again:

US Virgin Islands (208 in April 2022)

One team drops to a new low:

Liechtenstein (203 - 200 in July 2023)

  2. Yes, I will simulate the upcoming Asian and African Cup of Nations, somewhere in the coming weeks. Also scheduled are new simulations of the ongoing World Cup qualification in South America, Asia and Africa.

  3. Oh Ed you are a dining problems for the Copa America. You’ve put Uruguay above USA and Mexico which supposedly means the group heads for the Copa will be Arg, Bra, Uru and either USA or Mex. That’s not what USA or Mex expected. You’ve done it now. :)

I’m sure another ranking method will be used for the group heads.

    1. Hello again
Does Fifa consider that the CNL quarterfinals be considered elimination matches? That doesn't happen when they are a single match like in the World Cups or European Cups?
As they are round-trip matches, they should not be considered eliminatory in my opinion.

    2. See the discussion in the other comments below about exactly this topic. Short answer: we don't know and we will have to wait until Thursday.

    3. Thanks Ed. Perhaps the organizers took advantage of the October Ranking positions to adjust the seedings, obviously thinking about economic convenience.

  4. As long as the US of A is seeded and avoids ARG, BRA and URU in the group stage, I think everything is quite okay for the organizing host :)
I haven't seen anything yet about the CA draw procedure, so maybe they won't use the FIFA ranking at all.

  5. Good morning, I am from Uruguay and I am retired, and as a hobby I develop something very similar to what you do.
I have a question, are you sure that the 2023 Pacific Games will be included in the next Fifa Ranking?
Is the reinstatement of Tonda, Samoa and American Samoa confirmed?
    Thank you
My email is ebonda@adinet.com.uy in case you want to share information and I can send you the forms that I make as a game
    Greetings

  6. Hi Eduardo,
the matches in the Pacific Games 2023 tournament appear in my three sources (soccerway.com, theroonba.com and eloratings.net) so that's for me reason enough to expect that these matches will be included in the FIFA ranking.

The rule is that only teams appear in a FIFA ranking that have played at least one international match the past 4 years. And Tonga, Samoa, and American Samoa were removed from the ranking in July 2023, because then their last international match was played in July 2019. Now they have played in this tournament, so they will be reinstated in this November ranking.

The November ranking will be published on Thursday 30th. The deadline for that ranking is Sunday 26th. Therefore, the group stage matches will be included in the November ranking and the matches in the knock-out stage (which starts on Monday 27th) will be included in the December ranking.

And... the only confirmation you will ever get from FIFA is their published ranking. They are not known for being transparent beforehand about anything concerning their ranking.

  7. Hey Ed I don’t know if you care but the one other site that pretends to also do what you do has Mexico higher up as they seem to be counting the concacaf semis as one game and not two distinct games.

I am fighting the good fight and advising people online that your site is right (you are always right). However I if fifa decide to count that as 1 game then we might as well start making things up ourselves right? I say point for pretty jerseys. :)

    ReplyDelete
  8. Well, points for the CONCACAF teams in the quarter finals are a bit of a question mark until next Thursday. Because the quarter finals in CNL are a completely new type of match there are a few unknowns around the points calculation of these matches:
    - what is the I-factor used, 15 or 25? I use I = 25 in my preview.
    - are they handled as knock-out matches or not? If yes, then teams can't lose points for a match, if no (by mistake my choice in the above preview, I think they will count as knock-out matches though), then teams can lose points.

I think it's anyway incorrect to handle the home-and-away matches in the quarter finals as one match.

Your suggestion about points for pretty jerseys though... :D

    1. FIFA considers the CNL quarterfinals with a factor of 15. Maybe 25 is only for the final four. I was already checking that today. The Jamaica Guatemala friendly match was also considered off the FIFA date

    2. These round-trip matches are not considered eliminatory. Therefore a score is normally assigned if you win or lose.

  9. As usual your explanations and details are more than we get from FIFA Ed. Great work as always and greatly appreciated.

  10. Storm in a tea-cup after all that! CONCACAF Nations League matches just normal matches as expected really, and Pacific Games matches after 26 November not included. If all ranking updates were this simple!

    1. I say that, but they included Jamaica v Guatemala even though Guatemala used 7 substitutes, so I expect that match to be removed next ranking when FIFA finally figure out what everyone else already knows.

    2. On a related note though the Copa America pots were decided earlier in the week BEFORE the new rankings to ensure Mexico were in pot 1.

It can only happen to little Uruguay. Won’t make a difference. We will get our 16th but still while we all know money talks it’s a bit much when it’s this obvious.

    3. I think that anticipating how the new Ranking would come, given that Uruguay had beaten Argentina in the World Cup Qualifiers and that generated many positive points, they put together the names with the October Ranking that coincided with the interests of the seeded teams.

    4. In the rules of Copa América (published yesterday) it says that Pot 1 will include the champions of their respective confederations, Mexico and Argentina, as well as the best-placed teams in the FIFA Ranking, one per confederation, so it's Brazil and the US.

All other pots are based on the FIFA Ranking.

    5. Hahaha. Those published rules yesterday seem like a “nothing to see here” comment.

Look it doesn’t matter but it stinks to high hell.

  12. It seems FIFA used and I=15 for the quarter finals of the Concacaf Nations League, which I find odd, and defeats do result in loss of points, which I'm OK with.

    1. Regarding the CNL quarterfinal matches, the final instance of only four participants emulating the European NL will be considered as qualifiers. That's why the factor is 15.
Regarding the loss or not of points in these instances, I think I assume that it is only in single eliminatory matches and not in round trips.
The Copa América should be considered in its group stage like all the other Nations Cups of the other confederations.
I = 35: matches of the final phase of the confederation competitions until
      the quarterfinals

  13. The new CONCACAF Nations League quarter finals were calculated as normal group stage matches after all, which I find a bit odd, but okay. I had at least expected an I of 25, but it turned out otherwise.

Because very few friendlies were played this November window all matches that I included were also included by FIFA.
As expected Tonga, Samoa and American Samoa were reinstated in the ranking.

The seeding for the draw of the Copa America 2024 was based on the FIFA ranking for pots 2 to 4. The four top seeds are Argentina (as Copa America title holder), Mexico (as Gold Cup title holder) and Brazil and USA as otherwise best ranked team from each confederation. The knock-out stage is scheduled in a way that the pair Argentina and Brazil and the pair Mexico and USA can only meet in the final.
How about protecting your commercial interests the best way you can?

    1. NL quarters were Copa America qualification matches and I=15? Well... How will play-in be assessed?

  14. Good question, George. I would say beforehand: exactly the same as the quarter finals: I=25 and points can't be lost. But that was apparently the wrong guess.
Probably it turns out that they will be treated exactly the same as the quarters in the November ranking: I=15 and points can be lost.
Once again, FIFA works in mysterious ways :)

  15. Btw George, I've sent Hypercube an extensive email requesting their help regarding the calculation of the CONCACAF ranking. That's now two weeks ago. Still no reply....

  16. Thinking about how non-transparent Fifa is, I think that with I=15 in the quarterfinals of the tournament, it would be damned if the I CNL, Mexico and the United States lost fewer points, and were not so far behind. And having lost a match with Honduras and Trinidad Tobago respectively meant that they would lose many points if the I=25
